What do you know about nursing care?

From Nursing Care1st October 2001 the rules on the payment of costs for nursing care in care homes changed. An NHS nurse assesses the resident's medical condition and assesses what level of nursing care is needed. There are three bands of nursing care: low, medium and high. The state will pay differing amounts towards the cost of nursing care. For the year from April 2004 the amounts in England are £40, £77.50 and £125 respectively for each of the three bands. The payment relates only to nursing care and not personal care. A different system is used in Scotland.

  1. Who can give me information about nursing care? Help the Aged (020 7278 1114) and Age Concern (0800 009966) produce information, and there are a number of local advisers and agencies who offer free or fee-based advice, depending on whether you buy financial products. The CareAware Helpline number is 08705 134925.

  2. Will I have to pay for my care? If you have capital of more than £19,000 you will be expected to refund the full cost of your fees. Capital includes savings, stocks and shares and property. Usually, if you own your own home it will be counted as capital but there are some important exceptions to this rule.

  3. What care options are currently available? The choice boils down to care at home or care in a residential home. Both types need funding, which means dipping into savings or selling assets to meet the charges for medicine, nursing care and the 'residential' elements such as food and drink, laundry, and so on. More often than not, the only asset available is the family home which may be sold to purchase a care annuity or bond, the income from which will go to defray the costs.

  4. What insurance policies are available? There are no 'insurance' policies designed specifically for the purpose of providing the cash to pay for care bills. There are, however, the usual range of insurance, investment and savings policies that can be taken out to achieve specific financial objectives; and, as with any savings or investment strategy, the sooner you start the better. Ask a specialist financial adviser for help.

  5. How much are nursing home fees?Costs vary depending on facilities and geographical location, but are unlikely to be less than £250 per week with many homes charging substantially more.

  6. What State benefits are available? There is a range of State benefits that may be available, but all will depend on individual circumstances. Contact your local social security office for more details.
